Welcome to Barbara McCarthy Photos. I'm a Dublin based portrait, commercial and outdoor photographer. I love capturing people and places through a photojournalistic lens.
I have been working as a photographer for ten years. My clients include entrepreneurs, families, charity organisations, tourist destinations, newspapers and commercial clients, who believe that an image is a powerful tool to convey a message. My images have featured in Al Jazeera, The Irish Times, the Sunday Times, The Sunday Independent, The Sydney Morning Herald amongst others.
I never go anywhere without my camera- whether it's a walk to the park with my daughter, or a cross country trip to Burning Man with her. I love travel, outdoor adventure sports and of course- taking photos. I’ve photographed the Queen, glaciers, black mambas, families and presidents.

I work all around Ireland and Europe regularly, while my assignment take me all around the world.

Why Hire Me?
Why not? To begin with I’m fun and easy going and make people feel comfortable, no matter what the situation. I focus on portrait, commercial and outdoor photography and my photos are very natural, but everyone looks great. When you look at my work on this site, you can see how I work with natural light as well as studio lights to create a very recognisable documentary style. I don’t do Kitsch, over processing or bad quality. I take pride in my work and go above and beyond to create the perfect image. As you can by this site, I don’t cut any corners.
If you hire me, I will arrive half an hour early- or more pending on the shoot and set up the lights and position myself. I will also talk to you about what you want from the shoot- be it corporate headshots or commercial work.
One of the most important things about being a photographer is having a personality and being able to deal with an array of clients.
I believe this is key to the experience. I've photographed the Queen one day and a homeless person the next. I've photographer criminals and CEOs, movie directors, movie stars, children and people with special needs. All of these jobs require humility and connection. I don't think you can connect with someone and get a great photo if you don't have a deeper understanding of the human condition. It is everything.
How does a photo session work with me? Here’s a little guide to how it works.
Being photographed is not everyone’s cup of tea. It’s not a natural process- smiling to the camera and feeling exposed. I get it. But thankfully I can make even the most uncomfortable person feel comfortable. Photos are among the most important possessions we have. They are historical documents capturing a moment in time, that never comes back. It’s so important to make that moment great!
The Process:
It’s pretty simple. We discuss the following:
What location you want to shoot at?
If you require styling/wardrobe?
How to prepare- what to bring?
How much time do you have? Who is being photographed?
Is it professional/private?
Do you want prints/wall art?
Is it for editorial? Do you need my media contacts to share my images with?
How many images do you need?
The Session
Sessions vary, that’s the beauty of photography. I have done photoshoots in the Alps, in hotels in Los Angeles, on the beach at Burning Man in the middle of the Nevada desert, in a studio, offices, or in my living room. Check out some of my work below. They can be ten minutes getting a headshot or 10 hours on a movie set.
After the Shoot:
Pending on the shoot, I generally have the images within 48 hours. The number of images you order is up to you.
I don’t send RAW files to clients. As the images are mine, I can use them for advertising or promotion.
